Fecal-Oral Transmission

Although I haven't started my research yet, it is safe to say that I have already learned about water borne illnesses. At this point, I am on day 3 of the trip to diarrhea heaven and it is thrilling. The onset was slow, starting with a stomach ache and progressing through a plethora of colorful movements and plateauing with a scenic waterfall. It really is a beatiful thing. Based on the knowledge of a first year medical student, I would diagnose myself with e.coli aka travellers diarrhea. Cipro, Gatorade, and a continuing regiment of Indian food are all in full effect.

I am in Auroville now and am settled into my place. I would post pictures, except, I can't seem to find my thumb drive. I just realized after I arrived at the internet place that I can put stuff on my external hard drive and bring it with me, so, that's what I shall do next time.

My trip to Auroville was fine with the exception that for five minutes, I was lying down and sleeping for the whole 2.5 hour cab ride from the airport to here. For the five minutes I was sitting up, I was givning vitamins to some kids in a village we stopped in to get chai (b/c my driver was tired). Based on the looks of the kids, they didn't like the taste of the vitamins and they'd have rather had the "money for chapati" that they asked for. At least I know that the vitamins are better for them.

The hostel I am staying in is composed of a german, four indians, two americans, and a south korean. They are all very nice and helpful in getting me aquainted with Auroville and Pondicherry. Last night, they took me to another youth hostel to watch the World Cup and celebrate some kids' birthday. After the World Cup, we went to some "Full Moon Party" where there was dancing. I didn't dance like my usual self would b/c I thought that too much movement might cause me to lose control of my bowels (sorry about all the bowel talk, but, it has been consuming much of my time lately). Speaking of full moons, there is a pilgrimmage to a very holy city about 2.5 hours from here that happens every full moon (tonight). About 400,000 people show up each month and walk around this sacred hill/mountain. I was going to go but I couldn't find anyone to go with me, so, I will go next month.

Lastly, I got a moped today. It is the easiest way to get around Auroville and the villages. There isn't much traffic on the roads here so it is fine. In actuality, it is probably safer that taking cabs or rickshaws becuase the drivers here are seriosuly INSANE. I am not kidding, the drivers here esentially play the game "chicken" every time they are on the road. I have never seen such lawless driving in my entire life.....in all the countries I have been in. No turn signals, no divider lines, no trafific lights, no sensibility....just lots and lots and lots of honking the horn. I am not talking about just a little bit of honking, I am talking about up to 10-15 honks per minute....it is ridiculous.

OK, enough of my babbling......time to go write an e-mail to my lovely wife.

bie bye.
